In early 1869, the railroads were racing to lay track. Congress forced both companies to agree on a finishing place. They selected Promontory, Utah.
The Golden Spike Ceremony
After the first rail was laid on October 27, 1863, the golden spike was driven on May 10, 1869, completing The Transcontinental Railroad. Hundreds gathered for the ceremony. Around the country, people listened via telegraph:
