Thesis Statement
The First Transcontinental Railroad, which linked the east and west coasts, was an innovation which made crossing the United States safer, faster, and cheaper than any previous route across land or water. The driving of the Golden Spike in 1869 marked the end of construction, which took seven years, employed thousands, and cost millions of dollars. Its completion unified the United States, created markets, expanded settlement, and furthered the decline of Native American culture.
